Knowing You Options Before Getting Treatment for Alopecia
My hair is falling out! Too much hair loss! Going bald! These are such frightening scenarios that no one really wants to be associated with. But anyone could be affected by this and maybe, some of us have already sought treatment for Alopecia at one time in the past.
So what is Alopecia? Alopecia means hair falling out that leads to baldness, which could either be of the whole scalp, just some part of it, or of the whole body. Most men develop receding hairlines as they age, women's hair become thinner with age, young adults develop bald spots in their scalp, mothers also find a bald spot on one side of the scalp or a person with no hair at all. These are all examples of the different types of Alopecia.
Hair loss could also occur by mechanical means. One of them is caused by habit, like pulling hair unconsciously from the scalp when watching television or during inactivity. Another is from the use of cosmetics like hair dyes and other hair treatment products. It could also be caused by too tight a ponytail or other hairstyles that pull the hair. Iron deficiency could also cause Alopecia. And chemotherapy treatment is the most common cause of hair loss in people suffering from malignancies. Treatment for alopecia seen in these examples is simply removal of the offending causes.
The most common causes of Alopecia, however, stem from inside the human body. One of them is known as Androgenic Alopecia which occurs in men and women causing pattern baldness. In what's commonly known as receding hairlines in men as they grow older. Andro came from androgen or hormones (dihydro-testosterone) and genic means genetic. In men and women, this type of Alopecia is associated with hormones inside the body that promote hair follicles to lose their functions. It is also because of their genes that some men are just born to be bald at some point in their lives.
In women, hormonal changes also play a role which occurs after menopause, or after giving birth or from use of birth control pills or dieting or some thyroid problem or the presence of systemic diseases. This is termed telogen effluvium.
The other Alopecia types also arise from inside the body. These are Alopecia Areata, Alopecia Totalis and Alopecia Universalis. With Alopecia Areata, only a portion or portions of the scalp are affected with hair loss, sometimes called patchy hair loss. With Alopecia Totalis the whole scalp is affected causing complete baldness. And in Alopecia Universalis, all body hairs are affected including the eyebrows and the pubic hair. Studies showed that these types of hair loss is caused by an autoimmune system disorder, meaning that there are some types of cells inside the body that attacks the hair follicles thereby affecting their functions. Genetic predisposition also is attributed to the development of these types of Alopecia.
There are many treatments for Alopecia or hair loss and they range from shampoos, to creams, pills and surgery. But before starting any treatment it is important to know what type of Alopecia one is suffering from in order to get to the right treatment.
